SPEC's Laminated Plastic, Non-Woven and Rubber Roll Covering Compounds
SPEC's extensive experience in the field of laminated plastic coverings allows us to develop, design and produce rolls unmatched in performance under unusual or demanding operating requirements. These rolls feature coverings of high strength, thermosetting laminated plastics that offer improved operational characteristics for specific rolling applications.
The laminated coverings on SPEC rolls is especially suited for steel industry strip rolling. The high density of the laminate prevents foreign particles from imbedding themselves and marking the strip. The superior surface toughness of laminated plastic, as compared to rubber, eliminates patterns that result from abraded particles of the rubber adhering to the strip, preventing subsequent deposition of tin or other final coatings. Since laminates are also non-magnetic and anti-static, they do not pick up metallic chips that might scratch the product surface. These rolls produce a longer trouble-free operational life, meaning reduced maintenance and less down-time. These dominant characteristics of SPEC rolls provide high operating economy and assure the increased production capability of equipment using SPEC rolls, badly needed in today's competitive market.
CM-RM100 - Cotton base impregnated with special phenolic resins and cured at temperatures exceeding 275° F. It is most suitable for dry conveyor rolls and other related applications, such as Side Trimmer Fillers, where these do not contact water, acid, or alkaline solutions.

PXX-RM100 - Paper base impregnated with special phenolic resins and cured at temperatures exceeding 275° F. Can be used in oil, grease, dry or wet. This material is the choice for conveyor, pinch and deflector rolls where a higher coefficient of friction is needed, wet or dry.
GLM-RM115 - Fiberglass impregnated with special Melamine resins and cured at temperatures exceeding 275° F. Can be used in oil, grease, wet or dry. This material is exceptional for use on Annealing Line Bridle Rolls. It can be used on rolls where the strip temperature nears 500O F. Any particles, such as "soot", cannot embed themselves into the cover causing future strip scratches.
LM-RM115 - Linen base impregnated with Melamine resins. It has the same properties as GLM-RM115, but has better machinability. Surface finishes will be much smoother than GLM-RM115.
GLE-RM115 - This is SPEC's top of the line material. It is a superior composition of a finely woven glass fabric impregnated with epoxy resin.
Our curing process incorporates temperatures above 350° F. This combination provides a hard, durable, corrosion-free roll covering that is light-weight and long wearing. It's as light as aluminum, as hard as chilled iron, three times as durable as hard rubber and will polish to a 45 micro-inch finish. GLE-RM115 glass epoxy has a finer finish than "fiberglass" roll covering and will not break, fray or separate. It is spirally wound directly onto your roll core. The "curing-down" of the cover insures a complete bond that even a 180° wrap of strip will not loosen. It can be used in plating, pickling, cleaning or rinse tanks. We can cover any roll up to 36" in diameter. This is the perfect choice for any deflector, pinch or submerged roll, except in chromic acid. It can be used in temperatures up to 500° F ambient.
These materials are either convolute or spiral wrapped directly to your roll cores for better bond strength. They can be ground or machined as desired with a concave, convex, grooved or flat face. The materials are in no way injurious to health. All of our materials are a natural base with synthetic resins.

Rubber Cover - After years of research, development and field testing in various rolling mills world-wide, SPEC has pinpointed two (2) elastomers as the best materials for covering rolling mill equipment. Although there are several variations of each material, SPEC's Vinacar and ARN series coverings are our top-of the-line rubber covering compounds. Each material offers high bond strength, tearing and chemical resistance where necessary. These compounds have been selected for the trouble-free operational characteristics.
3M Mill Roll Covers - Fabricated from individual, non-woven, synthetic fiber discs which are bonded together with a tough yet flexible binder resin. These covers are resilient, gouge-resistant and self-healing. In most applications, they are expected to outperform rubber covered rolls by as much as 50%.
SPEC has been a registered, authorized designer and distributor of these high quality rolls since the early 1980's making us the most experienced 3M Distributor in the world.
